Joshua Owens
A Compendium of Concept Art for the Fantastic Beasts Series
Joshua Owens is currently in his third year studying BA Illustration and is from Swansea, South Wales. His preferred method of creating is using traditional mediums- often combining properties of varying mediums in unison with one another- to create emotional, thought-provoking and entertaining images or compositions in a realistic style. His adoration of movies and the process of creating films often inspires and informs his illustration work, while also taking elements of historical art movements to create work that is atmospheric and dynamic while still remaining grounded in realism.

“For my final year project, my Graduate Portfolio project is a Concept Art Bible depicting visual imagery for the coming Fantastic Beasts movies. Taking inspiration from J K Rowling’s beloved Wizarding World, and the already established imagery and artistic aesthetic already established in both the Harry Potter films and first two Fantastic Beasts movies, I have created pieces that depict scenes, locations, characters and the narrative that surrounds them, and concepts that have been mentioned or theorised to be a part of the existing three in the film series. My Fantastic Beasts concept bible is separated into four parts:
• Props (Character wands)
• Costumes
• Beasts (that feature in the locations mentioned for the coming films)
• Scenes and Locations
The book is housed in a replica of the magical suitcase that protagonist, Newt Scamander, carries his fantastical or endangered beasts in.
I have a love and adoration for the Wizarding World and I have expressed this passion and knowledge of these stories into this project and I hope it translates into the designs and imagery I have produced this year.”
